The files are only half of it: your iOS app needs the Associated Domains entitlement (applinks:yourdomain), and your Android app an intent filter with android:autoVerify="true". Read how deep linking with URX works.
Checking assetlinks.json for Android App Links
The same check covers Android. Enter your domain above and the validator reads /.well-known/assetlinks.json the way Android's verifier does, then asks Google's Digital Asset Links API whether it sees your app. The usual reasons App Links fail:
- The fingerprint is your upload key's, not the Play App Signing key Google signs your app with (Play Console, Setup, App signing).
- The file is served as text/plain or text/html instead of application/json.
- The domain redirects (example.com to www.example.com, or http to https) before the file.
- The app's intent filter lacks android:autoVerify="true", or lists a host that has no file of its own.
On a device with Android 12 or later, re-run verification with adb shell pm verify-app-links --re-verify your.package and read the result with adb shell pm get-app-links your.package.
Questions
What is the apple-app-site-association file?
A small JSON file your website serves at /.well-known/apple-app-site-association. It lists which iOS apps (by Team ID and bundle ID) may open which paths on your domain. With it in place, tapping a link to your site opens your app instead of Safari: that's a Universal Link.
Where does the file go, and how must it be served?
At https://yourdomain/.well-known/apple-app-site-association, with no .json extension, over HTTPS with a valid certificate, with a 200 response and no redirects. Serve it as application/json and keep it under 128 KB. Each host needs its own file: example.com and www.example.com are checked separately.
Why does my iPhone still open Safari instead of my app?
iPhones don't read the file from your site: they read Apple's CDN copy when the app is installed or updated, and Apple refreshes that copy on its own schedule. So check the CDN copy above, then reinstall the app. Also make sure the app's Associated Domains entitlement lists applinks:yourdomain, and remember that links typed into Safari's address bar, or tapped on a page of the same domain, open in Safari by design.
What is assetlinks.json?
The Android equivalent: a JSON file at /.well-known/assetlinks.json that names your app's package and the SHA-256 fingerprint of its signing certificate. Android checks it to verify App Links, so links to your domain open the app without asking. Use the fingerprint of your Play App Signing key from Play Console, not only your upload key.
Why do my Android App Links open the browser instead of my app?
Android verifies each host in your intent filters against its assetlinks.json. If verification fails, Android 12 and later open those links in the browser (older versions show a chooser). Fix the file, then re-run verification on a device with adb shell pm verify-app-links --re-verify your.package.
